“'Theatre is about diving into your own emotions', says NSD director

“If you have a third eye, then you can act” – says Chittaranjan Tripathy Director, National School of Drama. An accomplished artist himself, his plays include the likes of Taj Mahal Ka Tender, Capitol Express, and he has acted in Hindi films like Delhi 6, Shubh Mangal Savdhan, got an award for best supporting actor award for his role in the Hindi short film ‘Biscut’ at Chile international film festival and showcased his talent in web series likes “Sacred Games”, “Rasbhari”, “Raktanchal”, “Farzi”.

Namrata Kohli in conversation with Shri Chittaranjan Tripathy Director, National School of Drama

1.    When it comes to theatre, can everyone perform? Like Shiamak Davar says – “Have Feet. Can dance.” Do think everybody has that innate ability to act?

If you have a third eye, then you can act. One has to be deep and perceptive. So, it is not only about dancing or emoting. It is about deep diving into your own emotions plus involves reading, research, observation of society, your own family and seniors.

2.    Why is theatre important for an individual or society?

The "Panchama Veda" (fifth Veda) is considered to be the "Natyashastra," a text on theatre and performing arts, which is often attributed to sage Bharata, meaning that after the four Vedas, the art of theatre is considered the fifth Veda as it incorporates elements from all four Vedas into its practice. If it was equated with the revered vedas, imagine its impact on the human body, mind and soul.

Five thousand years ago, Natyashastra was written in India which is the first ever treatise on theatre. What our forefathers wrote was a reflection of our society.

3.    Theater often requires specialized training in areas like dance, voice, or movement. What are the important aspects of training?

Theatre needs to have some training in movement, as opposed to dance which is a more structured and codified style of movement. When we say movement, we refer to the body language, gestures, that's also Angikam VachikamAngika means your body, your physical movements. Vachika means singing, Aaharya means costume, makeup while Sattvik means inner emotion. Theatre offers us the highest grade of understanding.

4.    Pls tell us about your course at NSD and career prospects.

Our three-year course is eligible only for graduatesYou can become an actor, director, scriptwriter and be involved with theatre groups, OTT platforms or film industry or get into academics and teach in colleges. If you do very well in films then sky is the limit.

5.    How has theatre changed over the years?

Theatre is a representation of its times. A film made in the silent era, like Raja Harishchandra, will be narrated differently today. With the same story, plot and everything else, the approach is different and has to move in step with the times and what this generation wants. Unfortunately, Indian theatre has still not become an industry and we need more resources to fully mount ourselves, like the western plays.

Telemedicine to the aid of home-bound patients in the time of Covid-19

Telemedicine in covid-19 times: You can get to the doctor almost anytime, anywhere, be it on your screen, via voice or plain text for a lower price than in-person consult Namrata Kohli   |   New Delhi Telehealth is bridging the gap between patient and physicians. The physician can now virtually visit the stay-at-home patient and heal from a distance Telemedicine in covid-19 times:  When 37-year-old Priyanka was down with fever and dry cough, she decided to consult a doctor over a WhatsApp call before giving her blood sample for an RT-PCR test. Based on her symptoms, the physician alerted her that it wasn't a mild Covid infection but a moderate one. His diagnosis was confirmed when the test report showed a viral load count of 20. “The massive benefits of telemedicine became evident during the pandemic,” says Priyanka’s doctor, New Delhi-based consultant physician Dr Arvind Kumar. “Everything is about time and if my patients have complications late at ni...

Random Musings .. Pearls Of Wisdom

Gem Of An Advice The other day I got a call from a colleague, a publicist, pitching her jewelry brands around the “auspicious festival” of Akshaya Tritiya. Jewelry shopping in times of Covid lockdown? Are you kidding me, I quipped. She said –“Ma’am its Akshaya Tritiya, the most favourable time to invest in precious metals and buy jewelry.” To me, this resonated with that not-so-famous statement made by the queen of France, Marie-Antoinette, who during the French Revolution responded upon being told that her starving peasant subjects had no bread to survive-  “So, let them eat cake”. Luxury today is being able to keep you and your family well fed and looked after. If you manage to find your favourite brand of munchies or sweet savories or lactose free milk, then it’s a celebration. Luxury today is getting to speak with any human being, even if it means a subziwala or a kiryana store shop keeper- the in-person conversation and the face-to-face interaction with ...

When Canvas Meets Climate

By Namrata Kohli Can art stir the eco warrior in us? Yes, art has an extraordinary capacity to stir our souls by tapping into deep, often unspoken, emotions and experiences. While beautiful paintings of nature or evocative art forms of mother earth may serve as therapy, sometimes art can reveal uncomfortable truths and shake us, shock us. Take the case of the recently launched Climate-Responsive Art installation at Karma Lakelands, an attempt to create a visual and emotional call to action against climate change. Below2° is an initiative by Karma Lakelands, India’s leading eco-resort dedicated to combating climate change with a commitment to sustainability and has been conceptualized and executed by the Greener Earth Foundation. Speaking about the installation, Ashwani Khurana, Founder & Chief Eternal Optimist (CEO), Karma Lakelands, said- “Sustainability and creativity have the power to drive real change when they come together. Below2° is not just an art installation; it is a...
